Biography

Hiraku Suzuki (born 1978) currently lives and works in Kanagawa, Japan, and obtained M.F.A. at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts in 2008.

Hiraku Suzuki considers “drawing” as something between pictures and language, and his art explores the new potential that this definition implies. His practice encompasses a large variety of media, including two-dimensional works, sculpture, installations, murals, video, and performance. Utilizing light reflective materials often in the artworks, he develops the theory of deconstructing the traces of signs that are distributed in our everyday world and rearranging them through a physical implementation to generate new circuitry in space and time. Inspired by diverse spheres that range from experimental music notation to art history, from calligraphy to anthropology, the artist describes his method as “alternative archaeology”. Traversing boundaries between the past and the future, the light and the darkness, or the internal and the external, Suzuki continues to expand and excavate the field of drawing.

In 2011, Suzuki completed a residency at Chelsea College of Art, London, and received a grant from the Asian Cultural Council for a 6-month residency in New York. In 2012, he lived and worked in Berlin as a grantee of the Pola Art Foundation. He has been organizing the platform for alternative drawing research and practice “Drawing Tube” since 2016. Currently he is a Global Art Practice lecturer at Tokyo University of the Arts, Graduate School of Fine Arts.

Recent solo exhibitions have included those held at ACAC, Aomori (2015), Daiwa Foundation, London (2013), Wimbledon Space, London (2011). Group exhibitions include “Very Addictive” Yinchuan Museum of Contemporary Art, China (2016), “Think Tank Lab Triennale” Wroclaw Architectural Museum, Poland (2015), “Vancouver Biennale”, Canada (2014), “Nissan Art Award” Bank Art NYK Studio, Kanagawa (2013), “Son et Lumière, et sagesse profonde” 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa (2012), “One And Many” Location One, New York (2011) and “Roppongi Crossing” Mori Art Museum, Tokyo (2010). Publications include GENGA (Kawade Shobo Shinsha/ Agnes b.).
His works are in the collections of 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Japan; University of Arts London, UK; Agnes b. collection, Paris, France etc.
